History: The original Emissaries of the Dark hailed from an alternate Earth, one where the the Bane-empowered Parliament of Darkness ruled all. There, the Bane approached individuals and empowered them in a grim mockery of the way Avalon selected champions to defend its realm.
The sorcerer known as Wynter came to this universe during his exile from Otherworld, fighting against the Parliament's oppression. He was eventually forced to flee, but not before he inspired others to rise up in revolt. The Emissaries were so angered by this that they pursued the mage through numerous dimensions, slaughtering all who stood in their way. By the time they battled their way onto the world of the Pendragons, the Emissaries had a lineup of Captain Englander, the robotic Gawain, Spring Heel Jack (an evil version of Union Jack Joey Chapman), Black Marvel (an evil version of Miracleman) and Lady Spitfire. The group was somewhat torn apart by in-fighting and Lady Spitfire's doubts, but they remained a powerful force under Englander's direction.
The Emissaries journeyed to Lyonesse and engaged the Pendragons in battle, but found themselves unable to overcome the heroes. The team was captured and confined to the metahuman detention facility in Darkmoor [Pendragons 11-12].
Several months later, Captain Englander was liberated from prison by Zhang Xiaomei, the new Lady Mandarin. Zhang had been ordered by the Parliament to form a new version of the Emissaries and claim the mystic Dragon Stone for their use. Alongside Englander, Zhang recruited Venom (who had recently fought Union Jack [Pendragons 24], Hurricane and Jack O'Lantern. These five clashed with the Pendragons in Paris, where both groups found themselves in mutual conflict with the Scrier Cult. [Pendragons 26-28].
During the battle, both Jack O'Lantern and Hurricane were captured but the remaining three Emissaries fled the scene. Not long after, Captain Britain tracked the three to the Dreslinski Hotel in London. Using the element of surprise, Captain Britain was able to defeat the group, saving her old foe Zhang Xiaomei for last [Captain Britain: House Braddock 8-9].
During recent upheavals in Darkmoor, several of the Emissaries escaped from custody. Zhang reformed the team with a lineup consisting of herself, Captain Englander, Venom, Jack O'Lantern and newcomers Dragonslayer and Hell's Angel [Tales of the Pendragons 15]. This grouping revived the ancient sorcerer named Kulan Gath and made several strikes against the Pendragons, while members Hell's Angel and Dragonslayer became lovers. They were ultimately defeated by the Pendragons and once more turned over to the custody of the authorities [Pendragons 61-63.] Venom has since clashed with the Pendragons on his own, working as an agent of Blackheart [Pendragons 78-79], while former member Spring Heel Jack was badly beaten by the Young Pendragons during an aborted prison break [Pendragons 76]. It remains a safe bet that the Emissaries will eventually reform again.
