"Terga, honey? Where are you?"
Terga Kalmaku stepped out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on a small dish towel. She saw her husband, looking excited, standing in the middle of the living room. He had a streak of grease on the side of his face that looked hours old and she couldn't help but smile. Marrying a grease jockey certainly made life interesting. "Making dinner. Same thing I'm doing every day at this time. What happened at work?"
"Got a call from Carol." Tom's eyes twinkled as he moved over to put his arms around his wife. "Not only is Hal back -- and sane! -- but they're getting married. Isn't that great?"
Terga hesitated. She knew how strongly Tom felt about his old friend, but she had her own doubts that needed to be voiced. "Tom. Hal killed people. A lot of people. You told me that."
"It wasn't him, honey. It turns out some villain named Malvolio was in the ring and--"
"A villain made him do it? That sounds like the oldest excuse in the book."
"Well... It's true. And it does explain a lot. I mean, all that stuff that happened just wasn't what Hal would do. No matter how upset he was." Tom looked at his wife, staring into her eyes. "He's the best man I've ever met. Period."
"Hmm. I think you need to look in the mirror more often. You're too good for him -- and that's coming from someone who used to like him. He's gotten you in more trouble than any one man has a right to... and you're always willing to forgive him."
Tom's face took on a wistful expression and Terga knew she'd lost this argument -- if she had ever even stood a chance of swaying him in the first place. "You just don't understand. When Hal's on his game, he makes everyone around him feel better about themselves and about their chances. That's why he's the best."

"Kara, watch your back!"
Hal's words of warning came a second too late, as Supergirl felt her cape suddenly gripped by powerful hands. The Justice League's newest branch -- aimed at being a cross being galactic defenders and ambassadors to the stars -- were locked in a pitched battle with the Fearsome Five and young Kryptonian was quickly learning that her combat training on Paradise Island hadn't quite prepared her for the real thing.
Mammoth whirled her about with all of his strength, letting go just as she'd achieved maximum velocity. She flew through the air for miles, finally crashing -- hard -- in the middle of the interstate. Kara barely had time to blink before a large truck came barreling towards her, its horn blaring. She sat up quickly, ignoring the pounding in her head, and exhaled all the air in her lungs. The winds pressed back against the truck, aiding the driver's braking. It slowed and came to a stop less than two feet from Kara's boots.
Back outside the apartment building belonging to former Justice Leaguer Gypsy, the battle raged on.
Green Lantern watched as his new teammates moved into action, with the Martian Manhunter temporarily taking on two foes while Kara was away. This was a good group, small enough not to get in each other's way but with varied enough abilities to cope with most any situation. Zatanna's magic seemed a good match for Shimmer's transmutation powers, while J'onn was able to go toe-to-toe physically with Mammoth and mentally with Psimon. Starman, meanwhile, was chasing Gizmo around the nearby woods, his solar blasts close to shattering the small inventor's forcefield.
And that left Hal to deal with the evil group's leader -- just the way Hal wanted it.
He flew away from the main battlefield, pursuing the fleeing Arthur Light. With words full of taunting, he yelled "Why aren't you standing and fighting, Light? I thought you were proud of that stolen power of yours!"
Light whirled about to launch a powerful volley of energy blasts. He made sure that each of them was yellow in color, piercing Hal's defenses and causing him to cry out in pain. Dr. Light paused in place as Hal collapsed to the ground, still weary from the pounding he'd received earlier. "I am proud, Jordan. More than you could know... Do you know what's it like to become a laughingstock? I once took on the entire JLA -- singlehandedly! But all people remember about me now is all the defeats, all the humiliations." Light held up his fists and powerful energy crackled all around them, nearly blinding Hal. "Now, though... It's going to be different. I've absorbed the energy from a Power Battery. It's nearly limitless. I'm a GOD now!" He pointed both hands at Green Lantern and discharged another burst of power.
Green Lantern threw himself aside, barely escaping an energy blast that would have incinerated him. Light was all too aware of the ring's impurity, making it helpless against yellow -- and the villain seemed intent on taking advantage of it.
Light laughed aloud now, his face taking on an almost unholy cast. Energy was flooding through him now, making him feel ecstatic. He wondered now why he'd even bothered reviving the Fearsome Five: he didn't need them, not anymore. They were just hangers-on, pretenders to his throne. He would have to destroy them -- after he'd slain the Green Lantern, of course.
Hal flew up into the air, dodging more energy bursts. He saw out of the corner of his eye that Supergirl had returned, slamming full-tilt into Mammoth from behind.
"Don't get distracted, Jordan. Could prove fatal!"
Hal felt renewed pain and glanced down to see that Light had formed a pair of light-based tongs that were gripping his leg. He's getting more comfortable with the Power Battery's energy, he mused. Just as he began struggling to free himself, that thought echoed once more in his head. "The Power Battery," he whispered. "It's all based on willpower....."
Starman saw his leader held tight in Light's trap and turned his attention away from the now-unconscious Gizmo. The diminutive villain lay on the ground, his tiny form smoking from the energy blast Starman had attacked him with. Will Payton flew towards Jordan, remembering that Green Lantern had been one of the first heroes he'd met after becoming a metahuman*. Meeting Hal had been one of the highlights of his life at that point -- and now they were teammates. Will certainly didn't want to let the older man down.
(*Way back in 1989's Starman # 6!)
Light felt some of his power begin to siphon away and he turned to see Starman nearby, using his power of energy absorption to drain Light's power. The unexpected assault allowed Jordan to fly free and the mighty Green Lantern chose to head straight towards Light. He wrapped his arms around the villain, holding him fast.
"Good job, Will! I'll take it from here -- help the rest of the League!"
Starman hesitated but elected to follow orders. He turned his attentions towards Psimon, who was waging a war of mental power with J'onn. It looked like the battle had gone the heroes' way, for only Psimon was left standing. The telepath was beginning to buckle as Supergirl unleashed her heat vision against him, J'onn cast one mental assault after another and Zatanna's magic worked to undo Psimon's defenses. When Will joined the fray as well, it proved too much for Psimon -- he screamed aloud, his hatred and fury at Light for leading them to defeat once more hanging almost palpable in the air.
While the rest of his teammates were falling, Arthur Light was ranting. His curses were laced with spittle, both of which were flung heavily upon Hal as the two men grappled. In his long life, Arthur had seen his brilliance scorned by those around him and he'd seen his burning desire for respect and power lead him to one humiliation after another... but he'd never given up, never surrendered. Somewhere deep inside, he believed he was meant for greater things.
Jordan was the very antithesis of Arthur Light. Handsome and confident were Light was professorial and neurotic, Hal had always possessed the spirit of an explorer. When he saw something he wanted -- be it a new car, a woman or a career -- he went for it, with full expectation of achieving it.
Light saw that and hated him for it. "I'm going to destroy you," he hissed. His eyes glowed with a fury that would have chilled the heart of almost any man -- but not Hal Jordan. He was a man without fear. A Green Lantern.
"You've got the power to back that up, Light... but you're forgetting one thing. You're channeling the power of a Green Lantern Power Battery. And our power is based on Will." Hal smiled coldly. "Want to guess as to which of us has a greater amount of that?"
Arthur Light's face fell somewhat. He felt what Hal was doing now -- draining the energy straight from him. All that had been stolen from John Stewart's Battery was now being pulled from him. He resisted, his own will warring with that of Hal Jordan.
"I won't let you beat me again, Lantern. Not again."
Green Lantern heard the madness in Light's voice and it frightened him. He suddenly knew, without a doubt, that his view of Arthur Light as an almost harmless old coot was wrong... this was a man capable of great depravity, if left unchecked. "You've already lost, Arthur... From the first moment you put on that costume and tried to be more than you are. Some people are born to greatness." Hal increased his expenditure of will and the energy around the two of them flashed so bright that it could be seen as far away as Metropolis. "And some simply aren't meant for it."
Green Lantern felt Dr. Light sag into his arms, the man's eyes fluttering closed. He almost felt bad for the guy -- almost.
"Is he dead?"
Hal glanced over to see Zatanna walking towards him. She looked a little scuffed and bruised, but mostly none the worse for the battle. Despite himself, Hal couldn't help but notice that she was a gorgeous woman. Different in many ways from Kara -- while the latter was full of youthful, blossoming sexuality, Zatanna was a much more mature woman... and Hal found that he liked that. She was like Carol in those ways. "He's fine. He'll have a hell of a headache when he wakes up, but that's it."
"Sometimes I wish we could do something to stop whatever's wrong with him. Fix it." Zatanna brushed her long dark hair back out of her face. "My magic or your ring, fixing all the wrongs of the world. Sick, huh?"
Hal smiled. "No. It's only sick if we actually gave in to temptation and tried to play god. Everybody's got a right to decide their own lives -- even if they're just going to screw it up." Hefting Light over one shoulder, he turned to face the rest of his teammates. "Good job, guys. I'll let you handle the drop off and processing of the Fearsome Five, if you don't mind. I've got a fiancé to get back in touch with."
"You're engaged?" Supergirl asked, skipping forward. Her face held a look of such intense interest that Hal almost laughed.
"Yes. I should have mentioned it when we all got together a few days ago... I hope you'll all come to the wedding, whenever it's going to be."
J'onn smiled softly. "Of course we will. Now go -- we'll handle things from here."
"Thanks, gang. See you tomorrow at our meeting."
"Penny for your thoughts, J'onn?" Zatanna was watching her friend's face, seeing the mixture of emotions that danced there.
"I was just... remembering. My own nuptials were a very happy event. I hope that Hal treasures these moments."

Carol stretched as she closed the door behind her. She'd heard from Hal an hour or so before, apologizing for not coming back sooner -- but she'd understood he was away on business. There were times in the past she'd begrudged him for the time he spent as Green Lantern, but she was going to try really hard to stop being so selfish. He loved his work -- and so did she. They'd just have to understand that about each other.
Her office was a fairly cluttered place but every stack was known to her -- what appeared to be chaos to outsiders just reflected her own personal system. It was the opposite of how her father Carl had always been -- he'd been strict and oh-so straitlaced. It had been months since she'd seen or heard from him. After watching Ferris Aircraft be rebuilt again and again, he'd finally thrown his hands up and passed on the business to his daughter, seemingly for good. She didn't really miss him anymore -- their relationship had been very tense for quite awhile -- but she wondered if she should call him and tell him about the wedding. She had to, she supposed -- he was her father, after all.
A movement at her window caught her eye. It was late at night and everyone but Steve in security should have been at home... so who had--?

A powerful energy burst sent part of the wall flying inwards. Carol reacted instinctively, calling upon the Star Sapphire powers that were now hers to command. A purple energy blast shot forth from her forehead, blasting away a chunk of debris that would have taken her head off. Around her, the air crackled as her costume appeared. Unlike the more armor-like uniform Star Sapphire had worn recently, Carol found herself drawn back to the original costume she'd worn -- it suited her personality far better, she thought. "Who's there?" |
The man who entered the room moved almost faster than Carol's eye could track. He wielded some sort of staff, which had smoke pouring from one end -- some sort of energy weapon, she realized. Almost before she could attack him again, he was upon her. He delivered a chop to her throat that cut off her air supply and then followed that with a swipe of his staff. It clocked her hard in the back of the head and sent her tumbling to the floor.
Carol felt like she was going to die -- she'd been in fights as Star Sapphire before, but it had always been in the background, locked away in the subconscious of an alien entity. Now she was in the forefront and it hurt like hell. Was this what Hal went through every day? How did he cope?
"Ms. Ferris," the man said, kneeling beside her. "This is nothing personal, believe me. Give me the codes I need on this paper and I'll stop hurting you. Try anything funny and I'll make you wish you were dead. Understand?"
Carol nodded dumbly, hoping she could stall long enough to get her head straight. She stared at the paper, realizing that he wanted access codes to Ferris accounts and contracts. Was this some sort of industrial espionage?
Pain flooded through her head again as the villain shoved her head into the floor. "Don't make me wait, girl. I'm on a schedule."
"Go to hell, you bastard" she whispered.
"Been there -- didn't like it. And the name's Deathstroke, not bastard." The mercenary gripped her hair once again and drove her face hard into the floor. Blood dripped from her lip and she wondered if one of her teeth wasn't broken.
"That's enough," someone said. Through the haze of pain, Carol thought it was familiar but couldn't place it.
Deathstroke rose, shifting uncomfortably. "You're not suppose to be here. This isn't the deal."
Carol saw feet move into view but she could barely lift her head. The man appeared to be walking with a cane and his breathing was hoarse and strained. "The deal has been changed. I'm tired of waiting. Tried of waiting to have my life and belongings back -- my company and my daughter, amongst them.
Carol rolled over onto her back, her bloodied mouth hanging open. Daughter? That's impossible. We haven't always seen eye-to-eye but daddy would never do something like this. Not if he were in his right mind....
But the man looking down at her was obviously not in his right mind. A glint of madness -- and calculating intelligence -- was all that stared back at her.
Carl Ferris had come home.

AUTHOR'S NOTES
Not much feedback on the series so far, but I hope you guys are having as much fun as I am. Next issue picks up on something that was decided back at the end of issue 3 -- that Hal was going to stay on or near OA, with the task of recruiting and training new Green Lanterns. So what has he done since then? Journeyed to Earth to fight Predator and then the Fearsome Five, along with joining the JLA again. I imagine the Guardians won't be too pleased -- but will they be surprised either? Stay tuned.
The following is a review of issue five, posted to the DC Heroes list by Mark "Puff" Anderson:
I like the proposal
scene between Hal and Carol. Do we get a super hero wedding sometime soon? I
picture GA and Plastic Man standing near the punch bowl trying to look innocent.
Could make for fun bachelor and bachelorette party scenes as well.
The attack on John Stewart was especially cold blooded. Nicely done.
A power battery-amped Dr. Light is a fearsome thing to contemplate.
Its funny how its worked out that GL's issue #5 and Replacements #5 are both
featuring different flavors of the Fearsome Five. Cool stuff.
I like the potential line up for this Justice League Pan Galactic Task Force.
Considering Hal's recent past, Supes considering him a good influence is a
stretch.
Which one of the JLPGTF is Batman's spy to keep an eye on Hal? C'mon, you know
there has to be one.
And the Bunker is getting play here as well. Cool beans.
Looking forward to the next issue.
I give it 9.5 out of 10 cigars.
Thanks for the review, Puff. For those of you who haven't sampled his excellent Replacements series at DC Heroes, do so. Now! I haven't settled on a name for the JLA branch yet but it's coming -- probably won't be the JLPGTF though, lol.
Keep in touch,
Barry Reese
